The paraplegic ski-bob

Alan Grace is a 36 year old paraplegic (injured in a road traffic accident in 1990). He has been a keen skier every since. In the Autumn of 1990 he decided to design and make a new ski bob, using carbon fibre to keep the weight down. The result can be seen in this photo. The ski bob features extensive use of Heinsco 43mm wide 200 gsm unidirectional carbon fibre. The ski bob weighs approximately 8kg, around half the weight of commercially available ones.

Alan was lucky enough to ski for 5 weeks last season, giving the bob a good test in a variety of conditions: racing as a member of the British Disabled Ski Team in a combined services race in France and in a Europa Cup race in Italy; training camps in America, including playing in the half pipe and getting big air in the snowboard park; and just for fun off piste extreme skiing in Argentiere, France. Happily, both Alan and the bob survived well.
